GET CELEB-STYLE SMOKY EYES

The smoky eye look is totally hot with starlets such as Maggie Gyllenhaal, for good reason: it's so versatile! The always camera-ready smokey eye can be done softly for a flirtatious effect, or ramped up to look super-glamorous. Snag the smoky eye effect for your next special occasion by following these step-by-step instructions from Myjellybean.com.

What You'll Need:

Eye shadow in medium purple OR medium-to-dark grey
Sponge-tipped shadow applicators
Liner brush (small pointed makeup brush) or Q-tip
Eyelash curler
Black mascara

Choose Your Shadow Weapon

Smoky eyes are all about eye shadow. Choose a rich, pretty color like a shimmery medium purple if you want to look smokin', but not too over-the-top. (Try NARS Eye Shadow in Night Fairy, or MAC Eye Shadow in Nocturnelle). For an all-out glam-baby effect like Maggie Gyllenhaal's at left, go with (we like Revlon Wet/Dry Shadow in Stormy, or Maybelline Expert Eyes Eye Shadow in Timeless Grey).

Apply Your Shadow

Start applying your chosen eye shadow by using a sponge-tipped applicator to pat color onto lids, from the lash lines right up into the creases of your eyelids. Dip your applicator into the shadow again and sweep extra color into the creases of eyes, moving the brush back and forth to blend it thoroughly. Next, swipe your brush with a tissue to remove excess color, and sweep it just under brows down to creases, to create a blended color wash from brows to lashes. (The shadow should look like it's gradually fading from the creases up to the brows).

Line 'Em Up!

Next, lip your liner brush (or Q-tip) into your eye shadow, getting it thoroughly coated with shadow. Sweep a line of color under your lower lash line, from outer corners of eyes to just halfway across. (Don't go all the way along or your eyes will look smaller). Dip your brush into some water, re-dab in shadow, and line your upper lash lines with color (go all the way across). (Smoky Eyes Bonus: If your shadow lines smudge later, they'll just look smokier and better!)

Curl 'n' Go

Finally, use your eyelash curler to give lashes a flirty flip (follow the instructions that come with the tool), then apply two coats of black mascara. (Try Clinique Lash Curling Mascara, or Lancome Flextencils Curling Mascara).
