The secret to getting perfect results from your eye makeup application? It all starts with clean lashes. Make sure there's no leftover goop on your eyelashes from yesterday's makeup. Use a cotton ball dampened with makeup remover (or baby oil, a cheap and effective alternative) to dab softly at your lashes and remove all traces of old makeup.
Using an eyelash curler (available at drugstores), curl the top lashes on each eye. Master this technique of (carefully) squeezing three times on each eye: (1) squeeze for 5 seconds close to the lash line, (2) squeeze again in the middle for 5 seconds, and (3) squeeze for 5 more seconds near the tips of lashes.
Use a large makeup brush to dust transluscent powder over your lashes. This will help your mascara to go smoothly onto lashes, and last a super long time.
Grab your mascara - use a lengthening formula (such as Lancome Definicils Lengthening Mascara, or Almay One Coat Lengthening Mascara) for extra long lashes - and apply one coat on top lashes. Follow with a second coat before it dries, holding the brush across the length of lashes (lined up against the lash line) and wiggling it to deposit extra mascara at the base of lashes, before sweeping the brush out to the tips. If there are any clumps, gingerly remove them with a finger - or use a lash comb (found at drugstores) to detangle and de-gunk.
Now that your lashes are looking long, it's time to create the illusion of thickness. Grab a skinny black eyeliner pencil (sharpened so the tip is very pointy and fine) and very carefully line your top lids as close to the base of your lashes as possible (it should blend into the mascara with no skin showing in between). The line can be thin for a more natural effect, or you can make it thicker - or lightly smudge it with a fingertip - for dramatic smokey eyes.
