DECOUPAGE SNEAKERS
Custom sneaks are so fabulous. This is a hot way to revive a tired old pair of canvas sneaks, a cheapo pair you just got, or ones that aren't your fave color anymore. Follow our tips for making a simple pair of sneaks look totally fresh and cute.
What You'll Need:
-Canvas Sneakers
-Tissue Paper
-Outdoor Mod Podge glue (available at craft stores everywhere)
-Beads (Pony Beads, sparkly craft stores beads, alphabet letter beads that spell your name or nickname - be creative!)
-Foam Brush
Step One:
Choose your colors of tissue paper. Tear off the straight edges and rip the paper into irregular 1-inch pieces. Lay the pieces out flat on your work table, so you easily grab whatever piece you want.
Step Two:
Beginning at the toe along the sole, brush on the Mod Podge. Start to lay tissue pieces on top of the glue, selecting pieces that fit along the curve of the sole (or rip them to make them fit). Tip: It looks best if you overlap the edges, to make cute color combinations. Keep adding Modge Podge, and then tissue pieces, to cover both shoes completely.
Step Three:
Brush on a top coat of the Modge Podge. Make sure to cover the sneakers with it completely. Let them dry completely (don't cheat - this is important!) and then apply a second coat. Let dry again, and do a third coat. (The more coats you do, the longer your decoupage sneaks will last).
Step Four:
When shoes are totally dry, string beads on the laces to decorate.
FRINGED JEAN CAPRIS
Got a pair of jeans that fit you everywhere else, but are too short on your legs? Or do you have an outdated pair (overly-flared or too skinny) that you'd like to revive? Use Myjellybean's tips to turn them into adorable fringed capris for spring! (Note: You can find the supplies needed at any fabric store).
What You'll Need:
-Jeans
-Pen or marker
-Sturdy scissors
-Measuring tape
-Needle and thread OR sewing machine
-Sew-on Velcro
-Fabric glue
-Ribbon (wide or thin, whatever you like the look of) and/or decorative fringed or beaded trim
Step One:
Put on the jeans and decide how long you want your capris to be. Then use your pen or marker to mark the level on each leg where you're going to cut them.
Step Two:
Pull off the pants and cut the legs at the spots you marked. You can use the measuring tape to check before cutting, to ensure you're removing the same length from each leg.
Step Three:
Now use your measuring tape to measure across the bottom of each leg. Multiply by 2 (to find out the circumference of the leg - or how long each pant-bottom is, all the way around). Then, for each leg, cut a strip of sew-on Velcro that's 2 inches LONGER than this.
Step Four:
By hand with a needle and thread, or with a sewing machine, sew the loop side of one Velcro strip to the bottom of one pant leg, folding the edge of the jeans under to prevent fraying. Repeat for the other leg.
Step Five:
Use the fabric glue to attach your ribbon and/or decorative beaded or fringed trim to the back of the hook side of the Velcro strip, covering it completely. Add a bit of fabric glue to the ends of the ribbon and the trim to prevent fraying. Let the glue dry completely.
Step Six:When glue is dry, attach your trim to the pant legs and wear your awesome new capris! (Tip: To keep the fringe from falling apart, remember to remove it before washing the pants).
TANK TOP BEACH BAG
Need a beach tote or a cute 'n' casual carry-all for the weekend? We've got tips for making a cute one at home, for almost free!
What You'll Need:
-Tank top (that you won't wear anymore)
-1 yard of cord
-Large applique
-Rickrack, fringe or other trim from fabric store (optional)
-Fabric/plastic flowers, and other decorations (optional)
-Fabric glue
-Scissors
-Safety pin
Step One:
The main step with this project is creating the "drawstring" for the tote - the rest is easy peasy. If you've ever had to get a drawstring back into a pair of pants, you know the technique! With scissors, open up about 1" of the hem of the tank top. Attach your safety pin to the end of the cord and push the pin with the cord through the opening into the hem. Work the pin and cord around the entire bottom until you reach the hem opening again. You should have both ends of the cord sticking out of the hem opening. Remove safety pin.
Step Two:
Now that you've got your cord all the way through, pull the ends, gathering up the bottom of the tank top as tightly as possible. Tie cord ends together and double-knot them. Trim ends and push the knot up inside the hem.
Step Three:
Using fabric glue, attach a large appliqué over the opening (the tank's neck hole) on the bottom on the bag.
Step Four:
Use your glue to fasten fringe, rickrack, pompoms, or other decoration around the edges of your bag. Glue on some fake flowers, beads, buttons, and any other decorations that strike your fancy.
