Dear Writer,
Highlights can look great, and so can going back to your natural hair color. But the in-between phase - the growing-out highlights part - can be a real pain. It's true that if you just let your hair grow out, it won't look great. But coloring it again is expensive, plus any time you apply color, you do damage to your hair, so you're also weakening hair's overall strength and maybe reducing shine and body. So what to do?
There are a couple of options to make it through the grow-out period. One is, just live with the two-tone hair until it grows out. It's not the best look, but in all honesty, it probably looks worse to you than anyone else. If you condition hair regularly, it will look better during this period.
Another tip is to use a shampoo/conditioner duo with highlighting properties, such as ARTec color wash products. These will deposit a small amount of overall color in your hair , to even out the overall shade and make the fading stripes less obvious. You can choose from among several different shades of this product, from light blonde to red or brown.
While your hair grows out, you can also experiment with styles and updos to tide you over. Invest in pretty hair accessories such as headbands, funky clips, unique ponytail holders, and even cute hats for winter.
Finally, get regular trims. As your hair grows, see your hairdresser regularly to snip off the highlighted ends (which are dried out and prone to splitting, anyway, so good riddance). This will help to keep your hair in its best condition, so it looks good when it gets back to its all-natural state.
