Dear Jellybean,

My parents and I don't agree on anything about my future. For example, my parents want me to live in a nice house when I'm older, but I wantto live in an apartment. I try telling my parents it's my future, but they never listen.

What can I do?

Sincerely,

Unagreeable Ursula

Dear Unagreeable Ursula,

Agree - while secretly disagreeing. Say to yourself, they want me to live in a house, but I want an apartment. So what! When I'm old enough to make that decision, I'll be old enough to pay for what I want, so they won't have any say in it anyway. I'll do what I want, and I'll be happy. No point arguing about it now - they can find out later that it's really up to me. See what I'm saying?

It's not much use getting into arguments about things that are going to happen way later. (Aren't there enough things to differ about in the present? Lol) Plus, who knows how many times you might change your mind between now and then. Just keep your future plans to yourself, like a happy secret, and smile and nod sweetly when your parents tell you what they expect you to do "someday", as you quietly think to yourself, "haha, wrong!".
