Dear Jellybean,

I LOVE to write music! I want to be famous and try out for DisneyChannel! But, the only issue is...my mom. I dont think she would care! She's not the "Hollywood" mother, she resents Hollywood and doesn't want me to go ANYWHERE near it. What should I do? I'm only 13 and most of the stars on Disney are 14, 15, or 16. I WANT IT NOW! Advice?

Love,

Dear Wants2BeFamous,

Wanting to be famous is a popular dream... but you have to back it up with talent! If you want your mom to take your goal seriously, you're going to have to prove to her that you've got what it takes to beat out the millions of other girls who ALSO want to be the next Miley Cyrus, and become the next big thing in Hollywood.

So how do you accomplish that? First, you need to get as much practice as possible, singing in front of other people. After all, you aren't going to get famous singing into your hairbrush - you need an audience for your performances. (Plus, the more you practice, and the more confident you get in your abilities, the better you'll be, and the better chance you'll have to succeed as a singer).

If your they put on musicals at your school, be sure to audition for them. Sign up for the school choir, perform at talent shows, enter local singing competitions (that's how Avril Lavigne rose to fame - check your local newspapers and city websites for information), offer to sing at birthday parties, family weddings and other events, audition for local theater productions (that's how Hilary Duff started out), sing at your place of worship (hello, Charlotte Church), in summer camp productions, offer to sing the anthem at local baseball games, and so on. The more you sing in front of people, the better you'll get at it. Plus, you never know who could be watching you - lots of famous people have been "discovered" in this way before!

You may also want to look into voice lessons. Even the top singers in the world, such as Christina Aguilera, built their voices by taking lessons, and still do continual training to keep their voices in great shape. It's a great way for you, as a beginning singer to learn good breath control, to develop your tone and vocal range, and to learn what kinds of songs suit your voice best.

Recording your singing and posting your music online can also pay off. More and more people are being "discovered" this way, so be sure to get a MySpace page and post your songs. If people like your music, they'll spread the word... and who knows where that could lead.

Do remember that this is your dream, and not your mother's, so don't expect her to get all excited about it... at least, until you show her that your fantasies of fame are somewhat realistic. Once you start getting critical notice for your performances, she is bound to take pride. But you have to take the first steps yourself, toward making your dream happen.
