Dear Jellybean,
I've been wanting to get my nose pierced (just a small stud) for quite for time now. But obviously what's stopping me is my parents. I haven't even asked them if I can because I am afraid how they will react! I'm guessing they will think i'm crazy and lecture me. I'm 16 (17 in several months) and I can't get it pierced without parental consent unless i'm 18. If it comes down to it, I will wait for over a year and get it pierced when I turn 18, but right now I just want help on how to convince them or at least talk to them about it. It's not something I just decided out of nowhere and I'm not doing it because my friends are (which they aren't), i think nose rings are adorable and i have even put little fake stick on diamonds to see if it'll look good and it did! I've researched how it's done, what to expect, how to take care of it, and how long it'll take to heal. How can I talk them into letting me get my nose pierced?

Dear EK,
I think you've already done all the legwork that's required. All you need to do now is ask your folks. Arrange to sit down and talk with them when they don't seem too busy, then present all your research to them, and tell them what you told me about your reasons for wanting a nose ring. You can even show them the fake one you got, so they can see it doesn't look so scary.
Yes, there's a chance that they will say no - but you'll never find out unless you take the chance and ask. If they do shoot you down, you'll be turning 18 soon and then you can pierce away. You may be surprised by your parents, though - so give them the chance to do that, by talking to them. Good luck to you!
