Dear Writer,

I'm sorry to hear that while you have accepted your body, your mother hasn't. Discussions of body issues and weight between mothers and daughters can get quite fraught with emotions, and I'm sure your mother's words bring up a lot of different feelings in you.

Wanting you to eat healthy is a good goal for your mom - after all, eating well is not just about how much you weigh, but about providing you with the vitamins and other nutrients to keep your body working well, and growing as it should. Even if your weight doesn't change when you eat healthier foods, you would certainly be a healthier person by doing so, and that's nothing to sneeze at.

However, since the discussion seems to be largely focused on your weight, I think it's time for both of you to have an expert "weigh in" (so to speak) on all of this. Tell your mother that you're interested in being your healthiest, but you think that both of you could use some professional advice about just what that means. Then ask her to accompany you to your family doctor's office, and ask your doctor to give you both a rundown on what a healthy weight is for you, whether you are currently healthy in your weight and eating/exercise habits, and what you - or you AND your mom - could be doing to make yourself (or selves) all-around healthier.
