Dear Jellybean,

Ok, over half the girls at my school dye their hair, but my mom won't let me dye mine. She says I have to wait until I'm sixteen but honestly, EVERYBODY dies their hair at my school! And the weird thing is, she lets me dye it blue. Seriously, she will let me dye it blue, orange, whatever, anything but a natural red or brown shade. It's so weird, I had blue hair for a while, but I really want brown hair. I really want brown hair, and I talked to her about it several times, but she won't let me even after I offered to pay. I keep asking her why she won't let me, but she never gives me a reason why. Please help Jellybean!

-In Need of A New Hair Color

I have no idea why your mom doesn't mind you looking like a Wonka candy, but won't let you go red or brown. To be honest, it's kind of bizarre. Maybe she's an old punk and she's trying to enlist you in giving it to the man? Maybe she feels like pink and blue are kid stuff, but brown or red would make you look good, therefore you'd be hit on by guys?

Who knows what is inside your mom's mind. (If your mom can't tell you, I sure can't!) You could have some fun freaking her out by coming home in a red or brown wig from the costume shop - and hey, she might even see how good it looks on you and change her mind. But if she's set against you changing your hair color the way you want, I think you've got to accept it and wait until you turn sixteen. Coloring your hair is great, but it's not worth doing if it's going to put a wedge between you and your mom.
