by an Anonymous WriterBeauty is the eye of the beholder. You are as beautiful as you claim to be.
But then there are those airbrushed models we see in the magazines. We purge into the porcelain toilet bowls, just to be as skinny as them. We harm ourselves like that. Cause ourselves to be sick just to be 'pretty'.
What is pretty? An opinion, I suppose. And if you looked it up on Wikipedia? They tell you it's a characteristic. But is it? Is it really?
How do you know if you're pretty? Can you tell by the color of your skin? Whether your white, black, or tan? What about the clothing you wear? Do those fashion businesses that claim they are beauty automatically make you pretty?
Why am I ending up with more questions than answers?
Sometimes I wonder whatever happened to the days when a swipe of bubblegum lipgloss was enough. The time way back when before recorded records when there may have been no makeup at all? And I wonder if the human race has always wanted to look amazing.
It's a good feeling, though. Feeling like you are the most beautiful girl in the world. It feels like a slap in the face when someone tells otherwise. Or maybe you tell yourself that. Tell yourself that you are ugly.
But personalities can be pretty. Kindness, love, and happiness are all beautiful personalities. But I guess that's stepping across a line, really. Some people will look no further than the outside, and if it's not enough, they won't try to look on the inside.
I believe the truth is that it's just how we are. We notice how each other look, and though we may not say it out loud, we make comments in our heads. Except for a few. But it's nothing to feel bad about. It's just the way we're programmed.
Maybe that's what started the skinny rage. Purging and eating no food at all is now too common. And diets among teens? Well, they seem to be all the rage.
But lastly, I wonder if we'll ever learn to look past the surface...
No matter how cheesy that sounds.
