Hahaha. I think what probably happened was the first person spelled it that way so everyone else followed suit without even thinking about it.

A lot of people think Sheldon from Big Bang has aspergers, but the writers have said he doesn't. But I'd still toss his name in there.

In my special education class last semester, my professor who has a over two decades of experience in the field said he was the poster boy.

Everyone already gave the examples I had in mind, but would Dexter (from Dexter, obviously) have something, mental disturbance related, which is considered a disability in a way.
