Daily Sketch Thread

A lot of people don't realize the intense amount of practice that is required to draw well. But it is intense. And I need a lot more practice. Artists aren't just born able to draw well, that's silly :P

I thought it would be a cool idea to start a daily sketch thread. You want to improve your drawing skills? hurah! It's not magic, sit down and draw. Practice. Your first drawings won't be amazing, but you'll get way better.

I am very bad at practicing drawing :P I really should. So lets get this started. Sit down each day and spend 30 minates or so on some quick sketches and post them.

I do like to draw but mostly just anime stuff.

I cant sketch.. I just can't. I hate drawing something and then seeing how ugly it is, and my sketches are ugly.

I can draw real drawings that take hours to finish but sketches, no.


Anyway, I mostly posted here to have it subscribe to my user CP.

I feel that way too. I am good at final paintings but my sketches are no good. I want to get very good at sketching--like Derrek Hess:

And psssstttt. The only way to get better at drawing is to beat though all the bad sketches you'll do in the begining.

of seriously THOUSANDS of poses. It's AMAZING. If you want to get better at drawing the human figure, this is definaly the place.

There is an even better section on that site, it's called 30 second drawing, it's a link on the side.

Have you ever done gesture drawing? The whole idea is that you are to draw an entire pose in a short period of time, which forces you to get the entire figure down quickly and express the entire movement of the body with very little lines and practicing this a lot really does improve your skills.

I am going to start doing 10 minates of it every evening. Who can't spare 10 minates? that's 20 poses. yay.

It's incredably frustrating at first, but you'll get way better at it.

I always lose my confidence when I get a bad drawing and never want to draw again. I haven't been practicing as I should. I'm going to do this.

I think it's best to just put it aside and start another when that happens. laaaa. I really like your study though, especially the head in the upper left.

All my gestures sucked. So I just did a more finished drawing. I really do need a better scanner. This makes the shading look so grainy and lame.

P.s. P. squared I like your sketches and your drawing is very good! Did you draw that from your mind? Are you practicing art in school or past time? I'm not good with real people but i'm good at creating characters...

ahaha. I know, me either but I desided I have to. We can motivate each other--yay!

I like the nice contrast between her face and the hood(?) she's wearing. I also think it's interesting how you compile your sketches and the blend together all at once (I didn't explain that well). I always try to do that nicely but it doesn't work out for me.

There is a site I posted earlier in the thread http://www.posemaniacs.com/ that I drew that picture from. They have all sortsa models, it's great. <3

Thanks, I am a senior in high school, we have art class but it's not very good. It's alright. I am going to college next year for art though, illustration.

What did you use for wash? And also, what is the purpose of it? (I like how it looks but I've never understood why, haha)
(And what's the white? Wax? Glue? Colored pencil? Something else?)

I drew it in a pencil and then everything else I did in photoshop. I jsut added a really little bit of color over in photoshop (that's where the white came from as well).

I guess I don't really understand your second question, "what is the purpose of it?" What is it refering to?
