The Romans first popularised the opal as a gemstone about 100 BC. They gave it the name Opalus (meaning, "to see a change of colour"). Before the 16th Century, the only European source of this rare and prized gemstone was the volcanic deposits of Czechoslovakia. Later, the Spaniards brought back fine examples of Aztec opal from the New World.
