Libra's astrological gem is the OPAL.
Just like the sign of Libra, the opal is all about beauty under pressure! Opals are created by percolating water in scorching, sedimentary volcanic ash. The ash dissolves the silica of shells, bones and various woods, “fossilizing” them into the gem that we call opal. Also like the sign of Libra, the opal requires a lot of TLC. The opal is not a particularly hard stone, so care must be taken to preserve the natural beauty of this gem.
The Opal is truly the "Queen of Gems" and is sometimes called "the Eve of the Gods". Opal is the stone of hopes, positive actions and achievements. It has always been one of the most popular and esteemed gems, in every ancient and modern time period. A big reason for this is the opal is known to absorb, carry and pass on enormous amounts of energy.
Opal is also a mysterious gem. Just as no two snowflakes are alike, each and every opal has a unique coloring, and appears different in its delicate beauty. When a Libra wears an opal, it promotes psychic stability, good mood, and the capacity to share. Perfect for the romance-loving Libra, opal is also the stone of love and romance and a stone to grant wishes and personal happiness.
Opals in Legend:
The Romans first popularised the opal as a gemstone about 100 BC. They gave it the name Opalus (meaning, "to see a change of colour"). The Romans prized opals above all other precious stones and believed the holder of one to be charmed with good fortune. Before the 16th Century, the only European source of this rare and prized gemstone was the volcanic deposits of Czechoslovakia. Later, the Spaniards brought back fine examples of Aztec opal from the New World. Beautiful opals have been featured in many of the Crown Jewels of Europe and they remain popular with heads of state and the rich and famous.
