Dear Jellybean,
I am a sports kid and at school thats what everyone knows me for but now im turning 16 and i feel almost that i am a guy i dont really own fashonable things; basically my closet is jerseys and shirts i have picked up at tournaments. i am also not a fan of my body i may buy something and think i look good but then when i go to put it on for school i feel that i look horrible in it and end up wearing a sweatshirt and basic jeans to school. when i do go shopping its always hard to find something nice b/c i feel like nothing is made for my body type. i am quite muscular with "guy" sholders and legs that even rival the football players in muscle, but i also have a bit of a gut that i have been working on getting rid of. do you have any advice on styles that will look good on my body type?
Sincerely,
Flex
Dear Flex,
Have you ever seen TLC's "What Not to Wear"? You totally need Stacey and Clinton! Since they're not available though (as far as I know) to drop by your place and give you a style seminar, I'm recommending the next best thing: A personal shopper.
Despite what most people think, personal shoppers don't have to cost a cent. If you live in a big city or town, your local department store may offer a personal shopping service for free. Basically, these people walk around the store with you and help you to choose clothes that flatter your figure and suit your lifestyle. You're not obligated to buy anything you don't like - but you are more likely to find stuff that you do like.
So call your local big department store(s) and ask if they offer a free personal shopping service. If they don't, or if you live in a small town without such stores, visit a boutique that has great clothes in the window, and ask a salesperson to help you find stuff that works for you.
Be sure to pick a salesperson who is dressed in a way that you like, or admire. There's nothing worse than fashion advice from somebody whose outfit you hate. Also be sure to use your own best judgement, since salespeople work on commission. They're paid to sell you stuff, and some of them will sell you anything - even something that doesn't look great - in order to make a buck. However, there are lots of great salespeople out there, who really do want people to leave their store looking their best, so it's worth trying this route.
Finally, if you have a friend who dresses well, get her to take you shopping. A real friend will give you honest advice about what outfits work on you, and which don't. If you mom is a snazzy dresser, you can also do this with her - in fact, she might love the chance to dress you up all girly.
Good luck - I hope you find some great stuff!
