A GOOD EYELINER FOR SUMMER

Dear Jellybean,

With summer quickly approaching I have been looking for a really good eyeliner. I need one that will last all day without melting in the summer heat, but it still water-proof (for by the pool, and in case I get stuck out in the rain). I'm also on a budget, and not willing to pay a ton of money. Application is no big deal to me. I'm experienced enough that I can handle most things. What do you reccommend? Is liquid liner my best option?

Dear Searching,

Waterproof liquid liner is a great product for summer. The formulas of most major brands have really improved in the last few years, offering better applicators and more smudge-proof and melt-proof protection.

Some of the best-rated liners, such as MAC fluidline and Lise Watier, are a bit pricey at $15 to $20. But you can get a great waterproof liner that's less expensive too. Prices vary depending on what store you buy them at, but three fairly-inexpensive products that I've read very positive reviews about are:

-Wet N Wild H20 Proof Liquid Liner (Retails for about $4)

-Maybelline Great Wear Waterproof Eyeliner (Retails for about $7)

-Loreal L'Oreal Wear Infinite Waterproof Eyeliner (Retails for about $8)

These liners all come in a pen applicator, so you never need to sharpen them before using. The liquid liner dries to a pencil-ish look and is pretty budge-proof once it's dry. (In fact, the only thing people complain about with this type of waterproof liner is that it dries so quickly, it's sort of impossible to smudge if you're going for that smokey-eye application. But for you, fast-drying and no-smudging may be a plus). All three are ophthalmologist-tested and suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

Do be aware that with waterproof eyeliner, comes the added requirement for using makeup remover at night. These liners are serious about being smudge-proof, and they won't come off with your facial cleanser, or with soap and water. You'll need to use a makeup remover (Vaseline works great though) and remove it carefully at night. (Don't skip removal, unless you like makeup-stained sheets!) Use a soft cotton pad for removing the liner, and wipe gently so you don't irritate or pull the gentle skin around your eyes.
