Dear Jellybean,
Every year my family and I go camping and it is expected that I go swimming. I'm really focused on my looks right now and i usually straighten my hair every day but i hate that my hair is naturally curly. So when it gets wet it goes back to curls and I never want to go swimming anymore. I still want to do my favorite things but what are some tips on how to keep my hair stylish when its curly without using alot of product?
Please help,
Unruly curlz
Dear Unruly curlz,
Camping is not a time when you want to be fussing with your hair (not least because your family will tease the heck out of you). So how do you keep your hair looking cute, without spending the whole trip in the tent with your portable flat iron? Here are my suggestions for quick and easy vacation hair.
This is a classic. After you get out of the water, apply a smoothing serum to hair. Any product will do - some good choices are Paul Mitchell Super Skinny, and Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Weightless Smoothing Serum. Comb (don't brush!) it through from roots to ends, then put your hair in a ponytail, securing it around the middle of the back of head. Twist into a loose bun. If you have bangs, use a cute headband (or folded bandana or scarf acting as one) to pull back the front pieces of hair. Voila - a cute vacation look, in about three minutes.
How easy could it get? If hair is long enough, apply some leave-in conditioner to wet strands, then separate them into two equal sections and do pigtail braids. Bonus - a day later, when hair is dry, you can undo braids for rumpled waves. Plus, well-conditioned hair is less frizzy.
Let your hair go curly - but help your curls to look good. When your hair is still soaking wet, apply a leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz cream, such as Dove Smooth and Soft Anti-Frizz Cream. (You can also mix this with an equal amount of hair gel, just a nickel-sized blob each, if you want firmer hold). Use fingers (or a wide-toothed comb) to distribute the product evenly throughout your hair. Finger-shape curls by twisting individual sections around a finger. If you want looser curls, make fatter ropes of hair. Allow to air dry, then gently shake head to loosen curls. Finish separating locks with fingers. You may be surprised at how cute your hair looks!
